The data unit of the Autonomy Institute

Data science, pointed at power.

Six data scientists and machine-learning engineers, doing the kind of computational research that used to need a corporate budget. We do it for the public interest instead.

Selected work

We read the filings, the donations, the contracts and the annual reports that no one else has the capacity to read, then turn them into evidence people can act on.

Working since 2020 The ADU is the computational research arm of the Autonomy Institute. We scrape, model and extract with frontier methods (LLMs, supercomputer-scale processing) and movement values. Our clients are unions, charities, newsrooms and campaigners: the AI Security Institute, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Equity, Unite the Union, the ITUC, the Good Law Project and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism among them.
What we do
§ 01
01
Network analysis
We scrape filings, donations, contracts and the open web, then use LLMs to pull out the entities and the links between them. Scattered records become a map of who is connected to whom, and who benefits.
02
Economic & labour modelling
Microsimulation, input-output models and bespoke indices. We quantify what policy debates assume but rarely measure: landlord profits, regional deprivation, the price of a climate shock.
03
Document intelligence
LLM extraction across millions of documents: annual reports, job adverts, regulatory filings, transcripts. We tag and classify them into datasets you can actually query.
04
Tools & data products
Public-facing tools: searchable databases, trackers, indexes. The people who need the findings can use them without a data team of their own.
